The Vast of Sand, one of Japna’s heritages

Sanin Coast National Park was designated as a semi-national park in 1955, and was promoted to a national park in 1963.
As for Tottori Sand Dunes, 131 hectares, offering good scenery of dunes were designated as a special protection area, where harmful acts have been strictly restricted.
Moreover, in 1955, Tottori Sand Dunes were designated as a national natural treasure being evaluated as scientifically valuable, due to its undulation as a coastal dune, unique geographical features and plant communities peculiar to dunes, including wind ripples, Saren (stripe pattern on sand), sand poles, and roundleaf chastetree (vitex rotundifolia).

Is this a trick of nature? — We put our feet on the art which wind and the earth have woven.
The great dunes measures 16 kms from east to west, and 2 kms from north to south.
The feel of the sand on your feet relaxes you with its soft texture after being on asphalt.
“The hill of sand,” carried by wind and Sendai River that flows from Chugoku Mountains, has been accumulating for 100,000 years, and thus the expansiveness fascinates 1.3 million people who visit annually.

Spring Scenery of the Dune

Northwestern seasonal wind ease and dune plants begin to come up from sand, and then the spring sky changes the sea and sand into brighter colors, with a the light feel of the wind passing through the Dune.

When spring comes, the Dunes start to show various expressions. The morning or evening is the best time to see wind ripples. Since the sun light enters obliquely, the shadows clearly come out and the beauty is highlighted.

Summer Scenery of the Dune

Kick off your shoes and have a work out walking on the sand. You will be fascinated by the white sand, blue sky, and deep blue of the Sea of Japan spreading with white clouds floating in the sky.

When the sun sinks into the Sea of Japan and twilight comes quietly, fantastic fires of the fishermen begin to be lit.

The night sky of the Dune is romantic, because the lights of the town do not reach the Dunes. You will feel the vastness of the universe by the stars light years away.

Sakyu Swimming Beach is a popular place for family and couples, because they can enjoy the long broad sand beach and clean water. It may be nice to try to make a sand sculpture on the beach.

Autumn Scenery of the Dune

In autumn, walking up to “Umanose” where you can look across the sea, you will feel a refreshing wind passing on your neck. The sky of the Dune seems endlessly high. It may be nice to listen for the faint sound of waves and enjoy tuning yourself to the rhythm.

Rakkyo cultivated on the dune sand bears lovely flowers from the end of October to the beginning of November. A 120-hectare plantation is stained red purple. Sakyu Rakkyo which grows on the hot sand of summer and in the severe conditions of winter is a brand proud of national popularity.

Winter Scenery of the Dune

In winter, a cold northwest wind, snow clouds, and cold air wash the Dunes from the Sea of Japan. Seeing the Dune during the clear weather of winter, we feel relieved for some reason. “Snowy wind ripple” may be also seen when soft powder snow piles up. Tottori Sand Dunes will be sometimes covered with snow as far as the eye can see. It is one of the scenes peculiar to dunes which we can see for only a limited time during the course of the year.

You will be at a loss for words of beauty. During Christmas season, the winter Dune is lit up with the illuminations near the dune entrance and in the lit show of the Sand Museum.

Play in the Dune

On the Dunes, you can enjoy sightseeing excursions such as camel riding excursion where you can indulge in an exotic mood, and horse cart excursions that afford a quick tour of the Dune. You can also safely enjoy activities including hang gliding/paragliding, because of the soft sand, even beginners can easily enjoy riding on the winds off the Sea of Japan. Activities like sandboarding where you ride down a steep slope of 30 degree are popular.
